Springfield, Illinois
Springfield is the capital of the state of Illinois. As of 2000, there was an estimated 111,000 residents in Springfield. Springfield was originally named after Calhoun after John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. Springfield was originally settled by trappers and traders who came up the Sangamon River. Lincoln arrived in Springfield in 1831 and was elected into the Illinois General Assembly in 1837.
Springfield is home to multiple historic sites, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Dana-Thomas House, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Lawrence Memorial Library, Lincoln Depot, Old State Capitol, Vachel Lindsay Home and more.
